Streaming Media

The first thing you'll need in order to stream our movies is Real's RealPlayer, available free on their site:

Q: When I try the Free Preview, I get a "The Page Cannot be Displayed" message.

This seems to be common with Windows XP, especially if you've recently added Security Patch II. Try these steps:

In RealPlayer, go to Tools/Preferrences/media types/ and make sure other media is checked.

Try this next. In control panels, there is a Security Center if you have installed the latest upgrades for XP Home. If the firewall is on then click on manage security settings for Windows Firewall. Under the Exceptions Tab make sure that RealPlayer is checked. If you see RealOne Player go ahead and leave that checked, but click on Add Program if you don't see RealPlayer in the list.

If that doesn't work, uninstall and reinstall RealPlayer 10.5. Go to the add/remove programs and uninstall Real. Then go to the website and reinstall the free player. The Free Preview should now work. You might have to go back to step two and make sure that RealPlayer is checked under the Exceptions Tab.

Q: I try the streaming movie, but it starts and stops.

This is probably due to an incorrectly set connection speed in RealPlayers's preferences. Our movies have been optimized to run at multiple bandwidths, from 38Kbps all the way up to 401Kbps.

Look under RealPlayers's Tools/Preferences and select Connection Speed(on the Mac, look under Preferences). For Bandwidth check that the Normal connection speed is set correctly. For dial-up users, this should normally be 56k; broadband users on most networks should have DSL/Cable (512Kbps) selected.

However, not all broadband users have connection speeds of 512Kbps or better. If you are still having problems, check your Playback Statistics under the Tools menu while the movie is running. If the Average Connection Speed is below the Encoded at speed, try lowering your bandwidth settings a notch at a time. Be sure to stop the movie and restart it, as your new connection speed doesn't take effect until you do.

Q: Shouldn't there be more than one link to the streaming movies? Everyone else's site works that way.

Well, no. We're just not everyone else. We went whole hog and got the best streaming server software available. This lets us encode one file for all connection speeds -- one less step for you.

Q: What if I don't want to stream the movie? I just want it on my computer.

That's where the clips come in. We've chopped the movie up into small clips so that you can have your favorite scenes to watch anytime. This also lets 56k users have higher quality video than they would through streaming.
